3 Easy & Elegant Braided Ponytail Tutorials for a Chic Look
3 Elegant Ponytail Braid Tutorials: Simple Yet Stunning Styles
People always say that hairstyle matters—and it’s true. A well-done updo or braided ponytail can instantly elevate your look, making you appear more stylish and refined.
Today, I’m sharing three beautiful braided ponytail tutorials that are surprisingly easy to recreate. Let’s get started!
【Style 1】 Layered Ponytail with Cross Braids
Step 1: Section the Hair
Brush your hair smooth. Separate the left and right sides and clip them aside, leaving a larger middle section.
Step 2: Create the Base Ponytail
Tie the middle section into a ponytail with an elastic. Divide the ponytail and take out the bottom third.
Backcomb (tease) this bottom third to create volume. Once teased, let the remaining ponytail hair fall over it to cover the teased section, holding the ponytail firmly in place.
Secure the ponytail again with a black elastic.
Step 3: Create the Curved Structure
Bend the secured ponytail inward and pin it underneath the original elastic using bobby pins.
Gently pull the curved section outward to both sides and pin it in place. Adjust the shape until it looks balanced.
Halfway done already—and it’s gorgeous! Make sure everything is secured tightly so your hard work doesn’t fall apart.
Step 4: Braid the Side Sections
Release the left and right sections you clipped earlier.
Start by making a basic three-strand braid for two sections. Then switch to a French braid technique—each time you cross a section, add a small strand of hair from the side (similar to a fishtail or scorpion braid method).
Once the braid reaches ear level, switch back to a regular three-strand braid and continue to the ends. Gently loosen the braid for softness and volume. Repeat the same steps on the other side.
Step 5: Cross and Secure
Pull the left braid across to the right side and pin it in place.
Pull the right braid across to the left side, placing it over the tail end of the left braid and secure it.
For a cleaner finish, tuck the right braid’s end under the left braid to hide the pins.
Add your favorite hair accessory, and this elegant, temperament-enhancing style is complete.
【Style 2】 Twisted Crown Ponytail
Step 1: Twist the Top Section
After brushing your hair smooth, take a section from the crown area. Hold it firmly and twist it from left to right.
Secure the twist with black bobby pins to keep it in place.
This step divides the hair into upper and lower sections, preparing for the next part.
Step 2: Side Twists
Take two small strands from the far left side. Twist them together twice.
With each twist, add a small section of hair from the left side (similar to a rope braid technique).
Continue twisting toward the back, incorporating the hair that falls from the crown twist. Then add the remaining left-side hair into the twist.
Keep twisting until you reach the ends. The strand will gradually become thicker as more hair is added.
Step 3: Flip and Secure
Once you reach the ends, flip the twisted section upward from bottom to top and secure it with black pins.
Adjust the overall shape for balance and fullness.
Finish with a decorative hair clip or accessory to elevate the final look.
【Style 3】 Layered Inside-Out Braided Ponytail
Step 1: First Flip
Brush your hair smooth. Take a small section from both the left and right sides, combine them at the back, and tie them with a black elastic.
Create a small hole above the elastic and flip the ponytail inward (inside-out twist).
Step 2: Repeat the Flip
Divide the tail into two sections and tighten the elastic.
Again, take new sections from the left and right sides. Tie them together with the previous tail, create another hole, and flip inward—just like before.
Repeat this process, tightening the elastic each time to maintain structure.
Step 3: Add a Braid
For the lowest tied section, take small strands from both sides of the tied ponytail and braid them into a simple three-strand braid.
Create another hole, flip inward again using the same method.
The technique is repetitive and easy—just remember to tighten the elastics properly.
Step 4: Wrap the Ends
Once finished, wrap a small section of hair around the final elastic two times to conceal it. Secure with pins.
And there you have it—a beautifully structured braided ponytail with layered dimension.
